8th june 2023 - random arna video #1 - "vil power"
There are a surprising number of videos out there on the net involving the Arna and every now and then we will be picking one at random to show on this page.
Whilst we are in no way 100% certain we believe our first chosen video is from 17th Feb 2007. The main feature is Lee Broster preventing a one on one attack by the prolific Sheffield striker Vill Powell. If we have the game right though Powell did go on to find the net in a 2-0 win for the visitors with the other goal coming from a certain David Wilkins. Attendance was 146 with plenty on hand from Sheffield in this their promotion year finishing runners up to Retford United.
Star of the brief vid for me though is most certainly the ever stylish Mark Clarke.
If anyone wants to nominate a particular video for this feature please lets us know on the forum or via our e-mail at [email protected].
I've mentioned our e-mail addy many many times over the last 17 years but its surprising how many still don't know it!

7TH JUNE 2023 - RECALLING ROVERS IN 1967
Memories of Arnold's home tie against Bristol Rovers at Gedling Road in the 1st Round of the FA Cup on 9th December 1967 - showing on The Bristol Rovers History Group's web site. On an icy Gedling Road pitch Rovers ran out 3-0 winners but the Saints were very much in contention for much of the game in front of a tightly packed crowd given as 3,390.
Proceeds from the game would go towards building the Market End Stand constructed by the Arna Committee in 1968.
In his programme notes Saints manager Noel Simpson commented "Many people have been critical of the decision of my Committee to hold the game in Arnold because of the lack of facilities such as not enough covered enclosure and no seats. I would like to point out that we are always striving to make improvements and that as a result of this first class draw we are hoping, with the blessing of Arnold Council to go ahead with another stand."
In the week before the game it was clear that Rovers fans were not too enamoured regarding a trip to visit "Arnold Who?" as the Evening Post reported that the Bristol club had returned more than 900 of their 1,200 ticket allocation.

The manager - Noel simpsonArnold's manager against Bristol Rovers was the no nonsense ex professional Noel Simpson aged 45 at the time of the game.
Born in Kirkby-in-Ashfield in 1922 Noel was 22 when he signed pro terms for Forest as a half-back/wing half in May 1945 going on to make 47 league apps and scoring 3 goals for the Reds. A £5,000 fee (hefty for the time) took him to Coventry City in August 1948 for the bulk of his career making 258 league apps scoring 8 goals. In Feb 1957 Exeter City came in for the 34 year old Simpson paying a £1,000 fee with Noel going on to be an ever present for the remainder of that season and totalling 33 league apps for the Grecians before hanging up his playing boots. Noel passed away in November 1987 at the age of 64. Pictured below is the Coventry team lining up at the start of the 1956/57 season. Noel on the back row stood next to City legend George Curtis who is furthest right. |
